Greetings membership!

I can't believe it's April already. Lots has been going on. The building repairs have been completed with many people to thank. Jimmy Meenaghan, our building chair ramrodded the whole deal; Paul Bentzen supplied the crew and excellent management; and Dave Sullivan took pictures and drew the plans. There is a whole bunch more of you and you know who you are. Many Thanks! We came in way under budget which means we have more money to spend on the docks and the pier.

We opened up strong with the St. Paddy's Day party and our friends at Point San Pablo YC cruised in. A good time was had by all. Thanks to Mia, Dave and their crew for cooking the corned beef and fixin's. Also thanks to the Auxiliary for supplying the soda bread and to Mary for making her famous whiskey cake. We went through quite a bit of Guinness and Irish whiskey that night. Thanks to all that made it happen.

We are in the process of acquiring a new card access and alarm system. The board is still working out the details. More to come on that soon. We will be ordering supplies for the docks and the pier in the near future. Work parties will be scheduled.
I have been busy this month using days on my ski pass to make all the hard work worth while, and it has been. Lots of snow!

Jerry

PS: See Paul's Bar Floor Repair Report on the extent of the work done.
Tom Schmidt is Watch Captain this month. If you are listed on his team below, please step up to help him out with the membership meeting dinner, Friday night happy hours and bartending for rental events throughout the month. Take a look at he club calendar for dates and details.

Lifetime Membership Awards for Outstanding Service
Two members of the Auxiliary were honored at our 2022 yearly luncheon. Berneice Moore and Emily Boyles received the Lifetime Membership award for outstanding service to our club. This honor is in recognition of their countless hours of volunteering for the Auxiliary. Their hands are raised to support any function we have held over the years, and we’ve come to rely on their contributions. We thank them for their outstanding service to the Auxiliary.

Past Auxiliary members who have also received this honor are Barbara Solve, Jeannie Devine, Giselsa Ross and Margaret O’Dryer.

We couldn’t function as well as we have without their hours of volunteer work.

Ernie
The Auxiliary is open to all members and their significant others. Traditionally the Auxiliary leans towards family related activities. We organize Christmas parties, theme dinners (i.e., Italian nights, Cook Your Own Steak nights, Karaoke evenings) and many other fun-filled events. The goal is always to provide enjoyment and opportunities for fund raising.

Dues are only $20/year and are payable to SRYCA. Just place your application and dues in the office mail slot.

BAR FLOOR SUPPORT REPAIR

by Paul Bentzen

As most of you know, the Club was shut down for the month of February to effect needed repairs to the floor supports in the bar area. This was necessitated due to poor repairs made by the contractor that repaired the fire damage in 2008. Primarily, the elevation of the earth was raised up onto the wood structure around the exterior of the building at the north and east walls of the bar area and north wall of the dining room. Any foundation vents were covered over by the earth.

On February 1st, Jerry McNulty mustered up a crew of club members who removed the paving brick around the exterior of the bar walls and dug down the earth fill and drain rock to the concrete foundation wall. The Hardie Board siding was removed 1’6” up and the sheathing cut open to expose the framing members. The great extent of rot caused from the lack of ventilation and earth against the building with inadequate waterproofing was confirmed. The floor was also opened inside the building on the north end of the bar to provide access under the floor to the crawl space. The repair work required was to be extensive.

On February 5th, a meeting was held with Jerry McNulty, David Sullivan, Jimmy Meenaghan, myself and Jose, an experienced construction person who has worked for me several times, to review the repairs needed. Jose and his workers were retained to go to work and go to work they did!
For the next 3+ weeks they worked their butts off. Crawling under the floor in the crawl space, they shored the joists and wall framing. After removing or cutting back all the rotten members, a new mud sill, blocking, and floor joists were sistered in. The sliding door and the door at the south end of the bar were both removed and replaced/rebuilt to repair the rot underneath them. Seven new sheet metal “Z” shaped vents were installed in the walls to provide necessary ventilation to the crawl space. Exterior sheathing was replaced, and the entire exterior from above grade to down over the foundation concrete was waterproofed. Hardie back protection board was installed to protect the waterproofing. Drain rock gravel and earth fill was replaced and compacted, and the pavers put back in place. New Hardie back siding was installed where removed.

A new perforated foundation drain was installed along the north wall of the dining room where there was none. The door at the south end of the bar was reworked to close properly. The floor at the north end of the bar was replaced with a “hatch” framed in for future access. A new access to the crawl space was also framed at the south end of the bar.

The carpet was put back where rolled back for the work. The Club was cleaned up and reopened for a private party on March 3rd. Major repair accomplished at a very reasonable cost!
The St. Paddy's Day Party was a blast! A BIG thank you to Claudia Holka for lending us her Photo Booth. It was huge hit! And to Rosie for entertaining the kids with games & balloons!

Origin: The phrase 'at the drop of a hat' originates in the 19th century. During that time it was common to signal the beginning of a fight or race by either dropping a hat or sweeping it in a rapid downward motion.
