Ahoy Members,

Our newest director, Paul Kerrigan had his first experience as Watch Team Captain in May and did a great job. Thanks Paul! There has been more than one instance where we have had too much food or even worse, ran out of food at our general meetings. This month we asked you to RSVP directly to the emailed announcement and we received a good number of replies by getting the notice out early in the week. So let's all get in the habit of checking our email and RSVP ASAP. Thank you.

May was a BIG party month. On the 11th was the 2nd Annual May Babies Party. The Humdinger Band really had people on their feet dancing to Janis, Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Aretha & others. Let me know if you would like to have them play at the club again for some other events.

Then several of us went to Petaluma Yacht Club's Annual Memorial Day Weekend. It is always a blast. Those on boats that stayed for the whole weekend were Dave Howe, along with Anne, on Lila Marie; and on Rick & Denise Goebel's, LeMinou, were me & Shirley and our soon to be new member, Steve Moews. Others that drove up were Dan Parrott, Derek Glazzard, Sheryl Lunsford, Betsy Burns & Dave and Burt & Barbe Drobnis.

This year's theme was “Hollywood Extravaganza” and boy did SRYC represent. We swept three out of four categories for Best Leading Lady, Best Leading Man and Best Group Entourage. Sheryl was Ginger Grant along with Derek as Gilligan (Sheryl even dyed her hair for her role!) Yours truly won the top "hat" spot as a Hollywood Big Shot and Dan Parrott won for his portrayal as an 80's Rocker. A huge thank you to PYC for another fantastic 'sold out memorable' weekend!
Corrections to May's Sea Breeze: 1: Jimmy "Meenaghan" helped decorate LeMinou for Opening Day. 2: We were on national TV in McCovey Cove not Cubby Cove.

See you at the club and be sure to welcome our newest members John and Karen Parodi who were inducted this month. They have a tug boat just down the creek at Lowrie's Yacht Harbor.

Last month Dave and I went to Alaska aboard the Crown Princess out of San Francisco. We went with two other couples Rick and Aldeana Saber & Jim and Von Hurson. This is a great way to go if you are thinking of an easy trip. It was 11 nights, and we had a great time. One thing that’s great about cruising is you can do as much or as little as you’d like, and you only have to pack and unpack once!
We’ve been under the Golden Gate Bridge a bunch of times on much smaller boats. So going out on a cruise ship is awe inspiring, especially when you’re wondering… Will we make it… that Bridge is pretty close! Throughout the entire trip we enjoyed watching the transfers of the pilots to and from the ship. There was even a nighttime medical evacuation via USCG helicopter.
We had a fishing excursion in Ketchikan, and that’s exactly what we were doing… Fishing… Not catching… But the whales were great. We saw some doing bubble feeding. That is when about six whales come up at once after they’ve rounded up the fish they want to eat.
I called a friend in Juneau, and he gave us the name of someone who had a taxi that could fit all of us.

We went to Mendenhall Glacier, then stopped at a great smoked salmon place, Jerry’s Meats & Seafood. Yes, I got our illustrious Commodore, a hat and a bumper sticker.
In Skagway, we did the White Pass Train, which was excellent. Sometimes they even run a steam train.

After the train ride, Aldeana and I walked around town and went to the Red Onion Saloon, a former brothel and enjoyed late lunch.
The next thing we saw was Glacier Bay. This is a very special place and just gorgeous! There are only two ships allowed in per day, so it was not overwhelming with cruise ships. They used a pilot there as well.

SEE MORE FABULOUS PHOTOS!
Our next cruise will be through the Panama Canal! January 2025. 16 Nights Norwegian Joy, Miami-Los Angeles, 1/21/25-2/6/25. Come with us if you’d like! We are traveling with a bunch of friends from various circles in life, and it will be fun to have you along. Check it out at Vacations To Go FastDeal # 16390.

Hello everyone,

We hope that some, or ALL of our new members will enhance their SRYC experience by also joining the SRYC Auxiliary and help/participate in the selection, planning, and execution of fun events to make membership even more exciting. Or, if you choose to join, you can just sit back and observe, and help out where and when you can (our by-laws DO require you to do SOMETHING during the year). Fund-raisers, dinners, cook your own steak nights, potlucks, theme parties, cruise-in events, and more are all potentials for the 2024 calendar.
The Auxiliary is open to all members and their significant others. Traditionally the Auxiliary leans towards family related activities. We organize Christmas parties, theme dinners i.e. Italian nights, Cook Your Own Steak nights, Karaoke evenings and many other fun-filled events. The goal is always to provide enjoyment and opportunities for fund raising.
Dues are only $20/year payable to SRYCA.
Just place your application and dues in the office mail slot.

In case you’ve ever wondered about the ship’s wheel on the wall nearest to the office and wanted to know where it came from, here’s the story:
When in the military all personnel have a certain Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) that they are assigned, trained for and function as while on active duty. You may perform a variety of jobs, but everyone has a “primary MOS”. In the Navy they’re called “ratings”. There may be different indicators of your MOS with the different services (symbols, patches, etc.) but as far as I know the US Navy and US Coast Guard are the only ones that have a specific insignia to represent each specific MOS, or “rating”. That way when you approach an active duty person who is at least an E-4 in rank, this insignia of their rating is displayed, with their “rate” (same as rank), on the left upper arm of their uniform and you will know, basically, what their job specialty and rank is.

The rank and rating patch on your uniform is always worn and displayed with GREAT PRIDE when in uniform and sets you aside from all the other servicemen and women. Of course, their rank and rating insignia sets them aside from all others, too.
Rank in the Navy is like the other services except the Navy has different labels for the different levels of rank (also called pay grade):

RANK or RATE ARMY NAVY & COAST GUARD
E-1 Private Seaman Recruit
E-2 Private 2nd Class Seaman Apprentice
E-3 Private 1st Class Seaman 1st Class
E-4 Corporal Petty Officer 3rd Class
E-5 Sergeant Petty Officer 2nd Class
E-6 Staff Sergeant Petty Officer 1st Class
E-7 Sergeant 1st Class Chief Petty Officer
E-8 Master Sergeant Senior Chief Petty Officer
E-9 First Sergeant Master Chief Petty Officer

There are a few other ranks, but this is already probably too much information. When I finished boot camp (basic training), I was assigned the rating of Quartermaster – Surface Ship Navigation. The symbol for the rating of Quartermaster is the ship’s wheel. I wore that insignia with GREAT PRIDE during my four years of service.

When I was separated from the service, and after a few years of being a civilian, I missed that symbol of my years in the Navy. One of our neighbors was an active Merchant Marine sea captain. On his next trip to the Orient I asked him if he happened to see any wooden ship’s wheels in any port, would he buy it for me so I could proudly display it on a wall in my home. Well, about a year later I got a call from him saying he had brought one back from Taiwan and it was waiting for me. I LOVED IT !!!

That wheel was above my fireplace for over ten years, until . . . I moved into a new home with a person of the opposite sex . . . and she HATED it!!!! MY big, beautiful WHEEL had been sitting in a back bedroom on the floor for over 25 years. Well, she moved out, but it remained in the back bedroom.

Then, after being a member of the San Rafael Yacht Club for a couple of years I was blessed with an inspiration!!! . . . . why not donate it to the Club? So, I called the best damn woodworker that I know, Marty Thomson (of Marty and Stephanie), and asked him if he would help me clean it up and make it beautiful again. Well, Marty jumped at the task and took over. He cleaned and scrubbed and sanded and brushed and stained and scrubbed some more, and now, what you see on the wall at the San Rafael Yacht Club, is my big, beautiful symbol of my time in the Navy. Now, every time I walk through the front door of the Club, I smile with PRIDE at that Ship’s Wheel and flash on some great memories of my younger days.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it !!! -Ernie

BUILDING REPORT

Clean up day on June 9th was a great success with help from new members Robbie & John Fleming, David Sullivan, Paul Bentzen, Jimmy Meenaghan, Jerry McNulty and myself. Areas in the parking lot, behind the kayak rack back deck and even the bar got a good spring cleaning. Thanks everyone who volounteered their time.
The parking lot can no longer be a free drop-off zone for used items. PLEASE DO NOT leave donations of any kind any where on the premises without permission from the Commodore or myself. It is unsightly and makes more work for us to dispose of. Thank you for your cooperation.
