Greeting Members,

Save the Date: To give you a heads up, I am planning a CHANGE OF WATCH ceremony on Saturday, November 9th @ 6pm. It will be a formal event with yacht club attire encouraged. Details to follow.

If you haven't been down to the club lately, you should come and see the improvements that have been underway over the last couple of months. The bar countertop has been refinished and looks great with the addition of the new bar stools. From now on COASTERS will be REQUIRED and NO LIARS DICE will be played on it to keep the countertop looking new. A big thank you to Marty Thomson who volunteered to help refinish the countertop and to Ernie Bergman for donating the custom SRYC coasters and holders.
The Pier Project is now in full swing and it looks like it may actually cost less than first thought. Upon closer inspection, not all of the pilings needed replacement. New deck beams were installed by Matt Butler and crew from San Rafael Yacht Harbor. Matt's community support and enthusiasm for the project earned Matt a Lifetime Membership and two of his crew are getting one free year of membership. Cheers to them for helping us to meet our goal to complete the project in time for the Lighted Boat Parade on December 7th.
I'll see you at the club,
Jerry
We have some important requests from Nadine Urciuoli at Helmut’s Marine Service. 1) Submit thank you letters to the Corp of Engineers for dredging the canal and 2) Support her "Waves of Opportunity" charitable event on Friday, Oct 4th.

Hi San Rafael Friends,

I recently had a visit from Talia Smith, who played a key role in getting our channel dredged through the connections she built with the Corps. Back then, she was with the city, but now she works for the county. She and Mary Sackett have been fantastic in keeping the San Rafael Channel on the Corps' radar, even taking several members on a paddleboard tour through the channel, thanks to 101 Surf Sports! During our conversation, it was mentioned that the Corps would love to hear from the community. They noted that they hadn’t received any feedback from business owners or residents since the channel dredging and are curious to know, “how things have changed.” These personal stories are crucial for their office to have on hand for the next round of advocacy for federal dredging of the Channel—they can relay these anecdotes to their DC headquarters.

If you could send letters, emails, pictures, notes, etc., detailing how the recent dredging has positively impacted you, it would be incredibly helpful. Any specific stats or examples (e.g., we can now service boats X days a week, of Y size, etc.) would be especially valuable. Please spread the word as much as possible—the more feedback we gather, the better! I’ll make sure it all gets into the right hands. All letters should either go to myself nadine@helmutsmarine.com and Talia Smith Talia.Smith@MarinCounty.gov to combine and distribute them to several parties.

"Waves of Opportunity"
~ Help Make Boating Accessible to Everyone ~
Friday, October 4th at the Sausalito Boat Show

Come meet the captains, explore the charter boats, and enjoy live music. Proceeds from your beer and wine purchases will support our "Waves of Opportunity" initiative, helping children from the Canal Alliance experience the joy of being on the water.

Date: Friday, October 4th
Time: 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Location: Charter Dock at Clipper Yacht Harbor

Boating offers countless ways to enjoy the water, yet this experience remains out of reach for many. The Sausalito Boat Show seeks to change that by highlighting diverse ways to explore the water—whether through boat ownership, paddling in a kayak, or embarking on a charter boat adventure. This event celebrates the passion driving the marine industry and its commitment to making boating accessible to everyone.

Helmut's Marine Service, in partnership with the San Rafael Channel Association and Big C Charters, is raising funds to take children from the Canal Alliance out on the water. The Canal Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty for Latino immigrants and their families by removing barriers to success. Despite living so close to a navigable channel, many children in the San Rafael Canal district have never had the opportunity to explore the water. Through the Waves of Opportunity event, our goal is to dismantle these barriers and inspire a love for the ocean while supporting parts of the marine industry.

For those interested in supporting but unable to attend, a page has been set up at Go Fund Me.

Thank you,
Nadine Urciuoli

Hello everyone,

The SRYC Auxiliary has been focusing on our last couple of events for the rest of 2024. Our “Western Night”, held on Saturday September 21st was a great success. We had 45 SRYC members including sailors from the Tower Park YC who paid us a visit. Steak, scalloped potatoes, baked beans, salad, garlic bread, and some delicious apple and cherry pies with whipped cream rounded out the fare. The band, “Natural Blend“, was great as usual, and we had a competitive horse racing challenge to fill out the evening. (See the winners below). Thanks to Rosie T. and all the Aux members who did SO much to make this a GREAT evening . . . Photos from Auxiliary's Western Night and PICYA’S Wheelchair Regatta September 28th are in the 2024 Photo Gallery.
The new 2024-2025 SRYCA Board of Directors will be sworn in at our installation lunch held at Piccola Trattoria in Strawberry on Saturday, October 19th (SRYCA members only . . . sorry). New officers include Mary Sullivan – President, Betsy Burns – Vice President, Kathy Taylor – Secretary, and Ellen Vick keeping on as Treasurer. AND, our annual Christmas party will be held at the Club on Saturday December 14th. Bring your appetite, your holiday spirit, and a gift to exchange . . . put the date on your calendar and PLEASE RSVP when the details are out so we can plan accordingly . . .

Our Sunshine Committee chair, Gisela Ross is mending well from a medical scare this late summer. We send her our love and support and look forward to her being back at full strength soon.

Also, think about attending our next meeting on Friday November 8th at the Club and meet the new board. Meetings will always begin at 1800 hours (6 PM) on the second Friday of every month. Come on down and join the fun . . . put your two cents in with ideas for future parties, dinners, and other activities . . . let’s get involved !!!!”

The Auxiliary is open to all members and their significant others. Traditionally the Auxiliary leans towards family related activities. We organize Christmas parties, theme dinners i.e. Italian nights, Cook Your Own Steak nights, Karaoke evenings and many other fun-filled events. The goal is always to provide enjoyment and opportunities for fund raising.
Dues are only $20/year payable to SRYCA.
Just place your application and dues in the office mail slot.

The bar refinishing project is completed. Many thanks to Jerry and Marty for all their extra time and labor and to Mia for getting the new bar stools and table just in time. There is a new gang box installed on the dock. This will house cleaning, first aid, and cruise-in supplies. The BBQ area was cleaned and organized with the help of Rick Gio for Western Night. The galley pantry has been thoroughly cleaned and organized with plastic see-through bins to save our supplies and new LED lighting was installed. Thanks go out to Jerry and Shirley for their help. The first part of demo on the deck has been completed. We will keep you posted on the progress.
On Sunday, October 13th we will have a clean up day at the club.

I hope to see you here so we can have more fun days at the club like we did this day.

Thanks,
Paul Kerrigan

MEMBER'S SPOTLIGHT

by John Bentley

As some of you know, Ann and I have been cruising the Great Loop through the Great Lakes and down the Mississippi River over the last year or so. One of the recent highlights of our trip was a stop a the Columbia Yacht Club aboard the Abegweit in Chicago where we exchanged burgees. The people and the ambiance are terrific. I really encourage anyone to use their reciprocal privileges to take in the beauty of their yacht club with a full view of the Chicago skyline.
Follow the links in the Online Ship's Store for product descriptions, colors and sizes for men, women and children's clothing and other items for home. Clothing in the club's Display Case are items available for direct purchase, payable at the bar.

Replacement:
Nametags: $15
Burgees: $25
