Ahoy Members!

Jeb, John and I met with City officials yesterday to discuss the dredging project, with positive results. More to come …

Mia and I went fishing for salmon aboard the Bass Tub.
Mia caught fish … I got skunked.

    DARTBOARD UPDATE BY DAVID SULLIVAN
    Thank You David!
    Dart-Board
I brought home the two old beat up dart board cabinets and started cleaning them up several months ago. I finally finished them and dropped them off at the club. Just a clean up, remember? These were going to be a stand in until we scraped up enough extra funds to buy really nice cabinets.
    ...the cleanup:
    • cleaned marks on cabinets and oiled the wood
    • installed a new center panel over the old center backing panel (had big holes and hundreds of dart tip holes)
    • stained and varnished the center panel and threw some varnish on the sides
    • installed new targets and new scoring boards
Many months ago, I purchased hangers (two sets) for the two cabinets and wall screw anchors too. I found the anchors in the elevator room. BUT I looked in both storage containers and no hanging fixtures. Someone may know where they are.

Dart players take over from here:
    1. Mount the two refurbished cabinets on the wall and mount the electronic cabinet in between
    2. The oche, also the throw line or toe line, in the game of darts is the line behind which the throwing player must stand. For steel tipped darts, it is generally 7 ft 91⁄4 in from the face of the dartboard, measured horizontally. There are dowels embedded in the floor that give the toe line (the oche) with proper distance to the target.

    SRYC AUXILIARY

The Auxiliary is open to all members and their significant others. Traditionally the Auxiliary leans towards family related activities. We organize Christmas parties, theme dinners (i.e., Italian nights, Cook Your Own Steak nights, Karaoke evenings) and many other fun-filled events. The goal is always to provide enjoyment and opportunities for fund raising. We celebrate once a year with a luncheon at a restaurant featuring a quality menu and fine wines. The money we raise for all of our events goes to an annual gift to the club. The gifts have been many and substantial, ranging from dining room chairs and tables, Galley dishwasher, to deck furniture and umbrellas. Recently we purchased heating lamps for our outdoor deck.

Dues are only $20/year and are payable to SRYCA. Place your application and dues in the office mail slot. We look forward to welcoming new members and will continue to support improvements to the San Rafael Yacht Club.

    “P.O.S.H.”

What’s the Origin of this Idiom?

Definition: The definition of posh is something or someone elegant, luxurious or stylish, or is something done in a stylish or elegant way. Upper Class.
Origin: When Great Britain still had its colonies around the world a very popular destination for holiday was India. The transportation was a steam ship down the coast and back up again returning home. The most desired cabin location was always on the shady side of the ship (it gets HOT!!) so when requested by the passenger, the crew would mark on their ticket “P.O.S.H.”, or, port out, starboard home.

The most elaborate version of the story associates the practice with the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, which from 1842 to 1970 was the major steamship carrier of passengers and mail between England and India.

The P. & O. route went through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. The cabins on the port side on the way to India got the morning sun and had the rest of the day to cool off, while starboard ones got the afternoon sun, and were still quite hot at bedtime.

On the return trip, the opposite was true. The cooler cabins, therefore, were the more desirable and were reserved for the most important and richest travelers. Their tickets were stamped P.O.S.H. to indicate these accommodations – in large violet letters, according to one recollection.
If you have a favorite idiom that you’d like to learn the origin of, let me know and I’ll check it out . . .
